Stop at the southernmost point of Sweden: Smygehamn

Someone told me a nice saying that applies really well to sailing: “I don't make plans any more, I only have ideas”. My plan was to go towards Trelleborg, but the wind decided differently.

I left Ystad a bit later than I probably should have but… well there was a delightful bakery with organic stuff, so I had to make a stop there! There wasn't much wind to be had anyway. So I started drifting at less than 2kts, but at least the tiny tiny wind there was was going in the right direction. So, to wait, I played some harmonica, there was a fantastic exercise from the school to work on building tension while improvising. I did the one take for the school and worked a bit more on that idea on my own afterwards. Seems quite appropriate to the theme of the day, the wind showing sign on the horizon of picking up but seemingly never reaching where I was… Until it resolved at last, and it picked up in from the West, in my face.

But at least I could move! I had to zigzag (tack upon tack) my way upwind, but it was still faster than the slow drifting of before. Alas, good things don't last, and the wind started quickly to gradually die down. When it became clear I wouldn't make it to the small harbour before Trelleborg I had planned, I decided to turn around and take whatever was left of the breeze to drift toward Smygehamn instead.

Even with the wind behind me like that, it still took a while to get there. I was a bit stressed by the depth of water in the harbour, but it all went OK.

Right on the horizon, you can see a flock of birds in formation. They passed really close to the boat, but I was too slow to take out the phone and snap a picture.

A bit of wind!

I have a stowaway passenger today!

With the sun dipping quickly and the wind disappearing, that's where I opted to turn and settle on Smygehamn.
