Wandering around Christiansø
Rest day to visit Christiansø: walking around, bathing, and waiting for the northern lights.
After a good night to recover from the long navigation of yesterday, I set up to explore the small islands of Christiansø. A nice slow walk along the old fortifications, the rocks, and the gardens, followed by some shopping (the tiny shop on the island had a surprisingly high amount of organic products!), and, after dumping the shopping in the boat, some more walk on the other side of Christiansø. There I stayed for a long time to help a German family that contrived to sail on top of another boat's line to a buoy and was threatening to smash in the rock. Once that situation was solved (which included, in the end, two of the Germans diving in the water to fix the messy lines), I was able to continue on my walk and go a quick visit of the tour. Then back to the boat to grab my swimming stuff and a relaxing dip in the sea.
In the evening I played some harmonica and guitar and funnily enough there was a Swedish couple who asked me for songs after I'd tried to play a Swedish blues/rock song. Sadly, I didn't know any of the songs they were asking for. I also met a skipper/beginner harmonica player who moored alongside my boat. So we talked shop for a bit, too.
Once the night was there, I did get up to go and see the stars, but after a long wait I'd only see a few falling stars and no signs of northern lights.
No panic, the postal-boat's pilot knows their stuff and stopped a few inches away from Elvira's stern but all under control.
A lovely walking path in the ruins of the fortifications.
lot of sun and nice views
Lovely looking gaff-rigger.
These blocks were custom-made to “tilt” beached tall-ships in Christiansø's harbour so they could be careened.
What it looked like at its peak power. (you can see a boat lying on the side, that's what they used the big blocks for)
It is a delightful island to visit!
